Deckle Edge Plein Air Workshop

Two day oil painting experience from the roof of their Woodstock location

15th and 16th November 2024

BOOK NOW

I am excited to announce that I am teaming up with Cape Town’s largest art shop, Deckle Edge, to teach a beginner-friendly plein air painting workshop.

If you’ve ever walked into an art shop the size of Deckle Edge and been utterly overwhelmed by all the products, this workshop is for you.

I will begin with a materials lecture and demo, giving you all the tools you need to begin oil painting. I’ll go over the basics of both alla prima oil painting and plein air painting, making this workshop useful for anyone just starting out.

From there we will move onto the roof to begin an afternoon painting of either Devil’s Peak or the industrial foreshore area. The choice is yours. We will then return the next morning for a morning session.

The Deckle Edge has kindly arranged for sample paints to be made available for those hesitant to buy their own materials, along with two sheets of Canson Oil paper, which is perfect for beginners. Otherwise this is the perfect opportunity to update your art supplies as I’ll be on hand to help!

A three day workshop taking place at two of my favourite locations featured in my upcoming solo show at Chandler House: Oudekraal Beach and Signal Hill. The cost is R3,000 for three days and includes your SAN PARKS license, Oudekraal day pass and 2 primed panels. A limited amount of Oil paints and brushes will also be made available for loan.

Morning 1 and 2: Oudekraal Beach

  • When: Friday 29 and Saturday 30th April 2022

  • Timings: Arrive 8am. Demo begins 8:30am. Painting begins 9am. Finish by 12:00 noon

  • Where: Oudekraal Beach. This stunning location has safe parking, toilets and an easily accessible beach with plenty of shade. Entry fee is included.

On the first day we begin with a demo and then move onto starting your own painting. The focus will be on drawing. You may choose to finish the painting or continue it on day 2 or start a new one. After the demo I will continually walk around and give one-to-one critiques to help you along your way.

Your SAN Parks license allows you to paint for the entire day, so you are welcome to stay at the beach until it closes at 3pm. Bring a swimming costume if the weather is good.

The location has toilets but no food, so come prepared with your own snacks, drinks and coffee.

Location for day 1 and 2. Bring a swimming costume, snacks and drinks.

WORKSHOP TWO - SIGNAL HILL

  • When: Sunday 1st May

  • Timings: 9:00 - 12:00

  • Where: Meet at Signal Hill parking lot and then pick your location with a view of Lion’s Head and Table mountain

Location note: park and meet at Signal Hill Parking Lot at 8am. We will walk as a group towards Lion’s Head where we will set up. This location is great for learning how to model form and recognise shadow shapes as Lion’s Head is essentially a cone shape. Make sure your set up is easy to transport. This location has toilets and food stalls.

Note, this day is more about you applying what you learned from day 1 and 2, so there will be less critiques than the previous two days.

Similar view to that of Week 2

WORKSHOP DETAILS

This workshop is open to all levels, and best suited to those with some painting and drawing experience and a love for the outdoors. While I am specifically teaching oil painting, you are welcome to use guache or acrylic if you like as the concept of direct painting applies to both.

We will begin the workshop with an introduction and demo from myself that will take 30mins. You then begin your painting, which you can complete over two days if you wish, or start a new painting on day 2 (note that only two primed boards will be provided, so get a spare one if you wish to to three paintings over the weekend)

During the workshops you will learn the basics of applying The Sight Size technique outdoors, the basics of comparative measurement and the constructive method. Reading material will be distributed ahead of the workshop. During the demo I will demonstrate how to mix and apply paint effectively. After the demo I will walk around and help each student (I will often paint on your painting myself).

Materials other than a portable easel and pallet are provided but I highly recommend that you get at least a few brushes for yourself. See below materials list for further info.

I have one spare portable easel to lend - email me to book it.

Materials List

Deckle Edge, The Italian Art Shop and Art Source stock everything you need below. (I have provided them with the following list)

  1. Portable Easel It is best if you paint standing up, so you can step back and look at your painting from a distance. This is by far the biggest cost but worth it in the long run. If you don’t want to buy an easel, a pochard box that can rest on your lap is another option. *I have one spare portable easel to lend.

  2. Assortment of long-handled paint brushes in various sizes: hogs hair (hard), synthetic / mink (soft) - both rounded and square. 90% of the time I use round flat filbert brushes as they give the most variety in stroke. For beginners, look out for yellow “Dynasty” brushes made in Thailand.

  3. OIL PAINTS. SEE BELOW (A limited amount of paints will be made available to borrow but I suggest getting your own)

  4. Linseed Oil or Walnut Oil - for medium

  5. Distilled Turpentine - for medium and cleaning brushes

  6. Small cup for holding your medium (oil + turps) - to hold medium

  7. Palette or box for mixing your paints (paper ones work well but make sure you get the big ones)

  8. Palette Knife. Medium sized teardrop shape.

  9. A roll of paper towel

  10. Plastic bag for waste

  11. Water and snacks

  12. Hat and sunscreen

  13. A bag or system for carrying everything with you. Coming up with one’s own set up is part of the fun of plein air painting!

  14. OPTIONAL: your own canvas or board if you want. We will be using small 20cm x 30cm panels, primed with oil-based wood paint and prepared with Transparent Red-Oxide imprimatura. If you bring your own stretched canvas, consider taping cardboard behind it to prevent light shining through. The Italian Art Shop sells very good artist’s panels.

  15. Covid-19 Mask

    Oil Paints

Every brand of oil paint is different and the quality for a single colour may vary from brand to brand. I recommend Old Holland or Michael Harding, but please get what you can afford. Each of the above mentioned shop stocks a different mid-range brand, all of which are workable (Winson and Newton for example). Avoid Zellen and very cheap paints as they have additives, too much linseed oil and the colours are often very different.

We are not using black and green. Reasons for this will be explained on the day.

  • French Ultramarine (cheap brands can lean more towards green than blue so its worth getting a good blue)

  • Cerulean Blue

  • Burnt Sienna (or Transparent Red Oxide or English Red)

  • Alizarin Crimson (used for mixing pinks and purples, so can be left out if you’re on a super tight budget)

  • Cadmium Red

  • Cadmium Orange (expensive and can be left out if needs be)

  • Cadmium Yellow

  • Yellow Ochre (don’t get a cheap brand for this as the pigments are usually too weak)

  • Titanium White (Please get a good brand for white as its the pigment that we use the most)

DRAWING AND sculpture workshops

  • portraiture - 4th & 5th DEC 2021

  • figure - 7th, 8th & 9th Jan 2022

  • LOCATION: Earth Play Studio, Scott Estate, Hout Bay

  • TIMINGS: 9am - 4pm, (Break for lunch at 1pm)

PORTRAIT DRAWING AND SCULPTURE WORKSHOP - Sat 4th & Sun 5th December 2021

  • Price: R2,000

A two day workshop at Earth Play Studio with a live model where we will explore the topography, plains and anatomy of the human head through drawing and sculpture. All proportional decisions in sculpture are drawing decisions, so we will begin the session by exploring the face through the use of simple pencil and paper. We will then use the drawings as a “map” to help one sculpt the face.

If you simply want to focus on drawing the face in any medium, and do not wish to sculpt, then you are more than welcome to.

Lissa Claassens will handle the ceramic-specific technical aspects of the workshop. Your finished sculpture will be hollowed out at the end of the last day in preparation for firing. We will notify you when the sculptures have been fired.

Lunch, snacks, coffee and tea are included. A second firing is optional (smoke or glaze).

Maximum 10 students so contact us via email (art@jviljoen.studio) or the contact form below. Payment reserves your spot. Fee is refundable up to 10 days before the workshop

FIGURE DRAWING AND SCULPTURE WORKSHOP - Fri 7th, Sat 8th and Sun 9th January 2022

  • Price: R3,000

A three day workshop at Earth Play Studio with a live model. Much like in the portraiture workshop, we will begin by sketching the figure as a way of understanding the proportions, anatomy, gesture and body type of our model, before moving on to sculpting the human form.

The morning of the first day will be dedicated to drawing, but you can choose if you want to focus on drawing or sculpture for the remainder of the workshop.

Lissa Claassens will handle the ceramic-specific technical aspects of the workshop. The last half of the final day will be dedicated to hollowing out and preparing your sculpture for firing. We will notify you when the sculptures have been fired.

Lunch, snacks, coffee and tea are included. A second firing is optional (smoke or glaze).

Maximum 10 students so contact us via email (art@jviljoen.studio) or the contact form below. Payment reserves your spot. Fee is refundable up to 10 days before the workshop.
